Effective but poor quality

I have purchased two of the Targus Chill Mats and for me, the best feature was the back ventilation as I use my notebook almost exclusively on my lap. Many of the cooling systems on the market have bottom and side exhaust making them less than ideal for lap use. Overall, the Chill Mat it is quite effective with an 8-13 degree decrease in system temperature, but the unit itself is poorly constructed. The usb power cord included with the mat had a short in the wires within 2 months time on both units. I purchased a universal power adapter to remedy the problem, which gave me the added benefit of fan speed adjustment via voltage settings but it virtually eliminated mobility. The poor quality of the case, made of a light weight plastic material led to the next problem I encountered. After 10 months of use, the top center portion of the case began "caving in". Although you barely notice it just by looking, its becomes quite obvious as it makes the fans spin against the top portion of the case creating a very loud noise. My laptop weighs less than 4 pounds, one of the smallest computers on the market therefore if you have a heavier notebook computer, keep looking. BUT, if your system is small and you're looking for a low cost yet effective cooling solution then it might be worth considering...just expect to be shopping at Walmart for a power adapter in 2 months time.
